Het alles door elkaar heen laten spelen is een doodsteek voor het luistergemak en dat leek Steve Lillywhite als de beste te weten. Deze producer is dan ook niet de minste, zo heeft hij samen gewerkt met The Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, U2 en The Killers om er maar wat te noemen! Het 3e nummer is Mercy wat tevens de single van het album was, hier kun je even bijkomen van de vorige nummers want deze is beduidend rustiger. Opnieuw van top kwaliteit en is hierboven te beluisteren.
Het nummer Sweet heeft een ontzettend lang ‘intro’ en als je al wat gevoelig bent voor zeurige nummers dan zal dit een ramp zijn. Het zelfde gebeurt in het nummer The Riff. Dit is tegenstelling tot Sweet wel een beter aangekleed nummer. Maar het klopt gewoon niet helemaal. Het zal altijd een kwestie van smaak blijven. De drie nummers Sweet, The Riff en Belly Full zitten allemaal achter elkaar en staan midden op het album, het lijkt dan ook om een dal te gaan. Daarna gaat de kwaliteit weer wat omhoog. De nummers geven een completer gevoel, de drie genoemde nummer missen wat elementen. Er had meer in kunnen zitten, dit ook mede omdat bepaalde stukken gewoon erg goed zijn!
Deluxe zonder luxe
Eenmaal aangekomen bij het nummer Rooftop zul je merken wat ik eerder bedoelde met de vergelijking John Mayer. Het is gezien de leeftijd van de zanger nog maar de vraag wie er eerder mee was. Afgaand op alleen dit album is dat niet te zeggen. De laatste nummers van De Deluxe Edition zijn live optredens, dit vind ik persoonlijk altijd wat minder. Het laatste ‘echte’ nummer, dus geproduceerd in een studio is Drunken Soldier. Hier lijkt het dak er echt af te gaan, want het is mij een raadsel wat de intentie hiervan was. Alle inspiratie moest samengevoegd worden en dit resulteerde in een mengelmoesje van verscheidende stijlen? Het nummer duurt een kleine tien minuten maar erg fijn is het niet. Alle live nummers zijn tevens al nummers die er al op staan.
